I want to talk today about resistance. It is something that came up in my mastermind with my own coach. I was working on something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time that just wasn’t getting done. I wondered what was going there that caused my hesitation. It’s resistance.
Resistance could be defined as something you want or need to do, and it’s been on your to-do list forever. It keeps ending up at the bottom of the list, and it never gets done. What is causing that?
You may think that I don’t deal with this type of issue and that I’ve got it all figured out. No, the truth is that I’m constantly peeling off another layer trying to figure this kind of thing out. Right now, I’m dealing with the issue of writing a book. I need to do it, and it needs to happen, so why can’t it come out? As I’ve been working through this, I realized this might be a good subject to share with you.
Resistance is a crucial subject for us as designers, as it can really get us stuck. There is always a hidden underlying reason why you’re not doing a specific thing. There are some beliefs underneath that you are holding on to that are causing you not to take action. To uncover what that is, it’s essential to get quiet and do some journaling about it. Write down what makes that task so hard for you and get in touch with the beliefs that keep it from happening, such as it’s too hard or it will take a lot of time to accomplish.
Watch the video above where I share why you should make a list of those things without editing or defining them. I also go into detail about overcoming resistance using the example of wanting to switch from being hourly-based to fee-based in your design business. You know other designers are making more money, and you may be leaving money on the table. In the video, I explain three common beliefs that designers hold on to regarding this and how each one can be uncovered as not true. It’s essential for you to make your own list about an issue that’s holding you back, do the research, and discover the truth behind each item, so you can take the necessary steps to make things happen in your design business.
