I want to talk to you about learning from mistakes. Sometimes we make a mistake and end up beating ourselves up, which doesn’t do us any good. It only makes things worse. You actually learn more from your mistakes than you do your successes.
No one’s life or business just continually improves. Sometimes we do things that are right, and sometimes we do things wrong. It’s a flow that goes back and forth. There’s a great quote from Winston Churchill that says:
“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
He’s acknowledging that life is full of mistakes and things we could have done better. But the point is that we learn from them and move forward without beating ourselves up.
It’s vital that you realize nothing is perfect in your business. No design job is ever perfect, including the Letter of Agreement you prepare and the fees you charge your client. But the difference is that you can turn things around to your benefit and get better every time you work on a project.
Another quote I like from Brené Brown states:
“Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. It’s a shield. It’s a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.”
Our imperfections create our beauty and the essence of what makes us human, and we need to embrace them. My message to you is that you are beautiful. You are smart. You are a money magnet. You are enough just the way you are.
Step out into the world, let your star shine, and let people see you. You can help people in enormous ways.
Watch the video above where I share what I do in my practice once a project is complete to keep improving, why we call it “Groundhog Day,” and how you can implement it for your business.
Until next time, design something beautiful and get paid what you’re worth.
