Indecision

I want to talk about indecision as a concept. It’s not something we think about very often, but it tends to get in our way a lot.

Indecision is probably the most expensive decision you can make. The problem is that it represents itself as waffling – I don’t know if I should do this or that? It makes you think you’re doing something, but instead, the result is you’ve chosen to do nothing. And you end up with the same thing you already have, which can get you into trouble.

This happens when it comes to making changes with your business. You postpone implementing design software or some other type of automation, and then nothing has changed. It will make your life easier, but you waver on what to buy. You aren’t sure of taking the time to learn how to set it up and implement it. And then nothing happens.

It can also happen with coaching or education. You know you need help, but you shop around and decide to sign up for a program after your next big job. But after that job is over, there’s no money for coaching because you didn’t set it up right, left too much money on the table, and you still won’t be able to do what you wanted to. And you’re right back where you started.

We create excuses with indecision, and then we don’t get anywhere. The same goes for hiring someone. You want to be able to offload all the tasks that aren’t design-related to someone else, but you convince yourself you don’t have the money or the time to train someone. The next thing you know, the year is over, and you’re still stuck in the same place.

I want to share with you my teaching piece about a decision-making process. When you have a set of rules to help you make a decision, it makes the process so much easier. It’s just five simple steps you can go through when you’re faced with a decision to help you move forward.

  1. Get clear with your goals
  2. Calculate your ROI (return on investment)
  3. Consider the alternative
  4. Consult your intuition
  5. Trust yourself

Watch the video above, where I go in-depth for each of the five steps to help you avoid indecision and grow your design business.

Until next time, design something beautiful and get paid what you’re worth.
