I want to talk to you about jumping into jobs too fast. I see designers getting into trouble fairly often because they get excited about the job, getting a concept going, and connecting with a client who’s really interested. But what happens along with that enthusiasm is that you may not get all the information you need to qualify the job, and that’s when you can get into trouble.
So, you jump into the job, you start designing and working all the pieces, you’re happy, and everything is great! Then, you discover that it’s not as great as you thought it was.
Why? You were in such a hurry that you didn’t write a Letter of Agreement that set the guidelines. You realize you didn’t set any boundaries about how many solutions you would provide. There’s no stop date, no payment dates, or any limitations on how many meetings are included. All of this erases the happiness you once felt when you started the job. It’s all added up to a mess because there were no “run rules.”
Before you jump into a job with a client – do you have enough information to write a contract?
Often, you don’t. You also don’t likely have a budget, which is a critical problem. It’s a recipe for needing do-overs a gazillion times. So, you have to ask yourself, do I have enough information to commit to this? Should I do a budget on the fly? Or, do I need to do an Exploratory Letter of Agreement to discover the price, scope, and what the budget of the job will be?
These are all pieces that need to be addressed. The client isn’t the one who is supposed to be in control of the job – it should be you!
When the client runs the job, that’s the reason behind your frustration. Because you didn’t have the “run rules” in the beginning and didn’t take control of the job, the client or the contractor ends up controlling the job. Then, your life is no longer your own, and you’re not happy.
