Recently, I was talking to one of my designer students about her elevator speech. She had some excellent networking opportunities coming up, and we wanted to buff it up and make it a little shinier. By making it a little tighter, I knew it would be a great way for her to get new high-end clients. To clarify, an elevator speech is how you say what you do in the time it would take an elevator to get to the top of the building, so it should be quick and straightforward.
What Should Your Elevator Speech Include?
The components to an elevator speech include, who is your client, what is the problem you solve for them, and what solution do you provide. For example, I told her mine was something like, “Hi, I’m Terri Taylor, and I own Taylor Design Group, a boutique design firm. I work with high net-worth families who are building homes that reflect their lifestyle and their success in life.” Pretty succinct, right?
Her reaction was, “Oh, that doesn’t feel good. I don’t think I could say that.”
The reality is: if you can’t say who your client is, or if you can’t say “high net worth families,” you’re never going to attract them. And there’s the underlying hidden piece that’s getting in the way of attracting the clients you desire.
The Truth Behind What’s Holding You Back
Now the underlying piece is generally a money belief, a story, or a family culture that is getting in your way. It all starts with your childhood. You know how when you’re a kid, your brain is like a sponge? It absorbs everything! And when it took in a specific event, whatever was said, or whatever happened, it made a judgment based on a child’s view of the world. What this actually means is that same view has been inside of you…
running the show ever since.
When you set out to discover what your underlying belief is, you need to look at it in different terms. In other words, this is what that situation meant to you as a child. What does that mean to you now as a business owner?
To be honest, it’s going to be something totally different. When you find that you’ve released that little kid piece from the equation, you’re free. You’re free to voice what you want, and then put the energy into it. When that happens, you start creating, and that’s a lovely thing!
