Allowing Imperfect Action

I want to talk to you about allowing imperfect action. When you do something you’ve never done before or stretch yourself a bit, there are bound to be a few things that don’t come out quite right.

In my world, I’ve had to learn to do all kinds of things online that a designer would never do. And when a mistake is made, it’s seen by 3,000 people and can’t be hidden. But what I’ve realized is that error is a learning moment for my team. We go back and take a look at what we need to do to correct it so that next time is better. And then, we can continue to make improvements as we go to make things really good.

Having the ability to look at mistakes and move forward is incredibly important. If you’re in a place where you’re trying to be perfect before you step out and do anything, you will end up stuck. You simply can’t be perfect the first time out. It doesn’t work that way. The genius is going out and doing it anyway. It’s having the courage to step out and say you’re ready to go.

I’d like to share with you a quote from Brené Brown,

“Perfectionism is not the same thing has striving to be your best. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. It’s a shield. It’s a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.”

Watch the video above where I explain the issue that comes up when you don’t make mistakes. I want to encourage you to embrace imperfect action. Try the things you’ve never done before and be okay with not being perfect. Use those opportunities to figure things out and make improvements along the way.
