Answer:
You have to make a clear decision about what you do want, rather than what you don’t want in order to make this happen. Focusing on the outcome that you desire helps you take the important steps that bring you closer to that goal. Say what you want several times a day to get the energy flowing.
On the totally practical side, here is what to graciously say when you get a request for new pillows for the guest room.
“Helen, I would be glad to do some new pillows for your guest room. I do need to tell you that this could be considerably more cost effective if you had more than one project to work on. I could get 3 or 4 things done for you in about the same amount of time.”
The usual response to this is “ Well, Joe and I were talking about remodeling the kitchen and we wanted to see about that as well.”
Or “Well, I guess I need to save up a little and call you back next spring when I will have more to do.”
Either way, you win.
