If I charge a design fee, I won’t get the job…

Question:

I am worried that if I charge a new client a design fee it will be too much and I won’t get the job. What do I do?

Answer:

This design job is going to cost the client the same amount if you tell them up front, or tell them halfway through the job. The real problem here is how you feel about saying you are worth a big, generous design fee.

Remember that you have valuable gifts that deserve to be paid for. Not believing in your skills and talents will cause you to give away your services without charging the right fee, over-deliver your design jobs, or struggle with difficult or demanding clients.

To learn to fully charge the fees that you deserve, try this exercise:

Ask yourself: “as someone who has an amazing and rare talent for _________, what is a fee that honors my talents and gifts?”

First thought is always the best! Jot that number down and post it where you can see it and practice saying it out loud for the next week. You will be amazed at how fast you will “grow” into your new number.
